“The Chester Thornless Blackberry is a variety of blackberry that was developed in 1985 by breeding programs in Illinois, Ohio, and Maryland. The blackberry was named after Dr. Chester Zych, a former fruit researcher at the University of Illinois, to recognize his contributions. The Chester Thornless Blackberry was created through a collaboration between the Agricultural Research Service, USDA, Illinois Agricultural Experiment Station, Ohio Agricultural Research and Development Station, and Maryland Agricultural Experiment Station. The blackberry was selected for its thornless nature and cold hardiness.” ~ Oregon Berries
