Papa’s cult favorite, small, round with a red blush and attractive, flavor enhancing russet. It has a bit of nutty flavor to the very dense, sweet flesh, often with a hint of citrus & vanilla. Chestnut Crab is an intentional cross of “Melinda” (a fascinating, deeply heirloom apple, probably originating in New England, circa 1700, an unknown cultivar). The Chestnut Crab was released by the University of Minnesota in 1946, and adopted by our legendary neighbor and Boyer Patriarch Bill Lower in the early 1950’s.
