Jonagold Apples

Jonagold! The now classic mid-season favorite of many. Cross of Golden Delicious and Jonathan, developed by the legendary Cornell University College of Agriculture and released in 1953. “Jonagold” is generally a large sweet-sharp, firm, slightly green fleshed apple great for fresh eating and a superior pie & sauce fruit. It inherits ease of growing from “Delicious” and a bit of a short shelf life from the old “Jonathan”, which is one of the best apples off the tree but fades within a month or so. Once heavily planted here in Adams County, PA and throughout the South Mountain Fruit belt for its heavy bearing, disease resistance and multi-use profile. Still popular but being eclipsed by newer introductions such as the sublime “Crimson Crisp”. Not tolerant of very hot summers, very good this year.
